Five minutes with Nick Dale

Nick Dale from the United Kingdom
I wanted to be a photographer when I was young. I started taking pictures again in 2013, when I received an email inviting me to go on safari and climb Mount Kenya. I’ve been a wildlife photographer ever since. I now work as a photographer/guide for those interested in private safaris.

What is it about photographing animals that you love?
Danger, beauty and cuteness. That about sums it up! The power of the long lens is to create pictures of predators that give you the impression you’re so close to the animal that you’re actually in danger. I love creating that frisson. However, close-ups can also reveal so much beauty in the animal kingdom, particularly in exotic birds that we rarely see and finally, every now and again, baby animals do something so adorable that you have to smile and sigh.

A lioness lies covered in playful cubs on the grassy savannah at dusk. There are so many of them that only her face and paw can be seen. Shot with a Nikon D850 in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania in March 2019.
