Three Elephant Bulls, Marakele National Park, South Africa by Sabrina Colombo

Picture Story

I was out in the field just after a thunderstorm: the roads were still pretty wet and the air was refreshing. I drove only a few hundred metres when I spotted 8 elephant bulls walking on a clearing, in the direction of the river. As part of my work is to monitor key species, I approached them with the vehicle to collect data and take identification photos.
The largest bull was leading the group. The others were slowly following.
These three younger elephant bulls were walking together, like a perfect trio. The bull in the center was a bit cheeky, I could see from the way he was walking and leading the way of the other two bulls who were with him. After I took this photo, that captured the moment perfectly, he kept coming towards the vehicle and showed off a bit, before walking away and disappearing in the bush. This was literally the last photo I took before focusing on the elephant behavior.
It was a magical moment, and when I look at this photo, I can still feel the vibes of the moment, as it will be in my memory forever. The perfect start for an afternoon in the bush!
Wildlife is simply wonderful and I love the way in which each day spent in the wilderness, is different and loaded with different emotions, which create lifetime memories!
