Male Pheasant, De Cocksdorp, Texel, the Netherlands by Marta Demarteau

Picture Story

During our stay at the Isle of Texel (De Cocksdorp), the Netherlands, we encountered a wild male pheasant living in the dune area. Our Holiday cottage was right beside the dunes. He visited our garden of the cottage now and again to enjoy the Sun, together with about 3-4 wild rabbits. He showed his beauty up close. He got used to my presence and started to groom himself right in front of me! Astonished as I was, I searched for the right angle to capture his beauty. His plumage was full of brilliant colour, especially with the sun shining on them. He was radiant! His actual living area in the dunes, belong to the Wadden Unesco World Heritage site. The Wadden Sea is the largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world. They stretch from the Netherlands, to Germany and eventually to Denmark. I have lived on the Isle of Texel for a few months for biological research in 2010-2011, so it was really wonderful to be there again in 2019, and to encounter such a beautiful pheasant. Let’s cherish life!
