Fuelled by his strong childhood passion, Matthijs has been photographing amphibians for the last twenty-seven years. Despite a good number of dangerous encounters, Matthijs pushes on. Through his lens, he pursues a life-long quest to capture the astounding diversity of the animal kingdom.

What inspired you to become a photographer?
As a child, I started keeping animals - lots of animals. Soon my bedroom was full with guinea pigs, hamsters, snakes, bullfrogs, mudskippers and lizards. I was still looking at books and saw magnificent animals in places that I wanted to visit. As soon as I turned eighteen, I left for Madagascar and have travelled ever since, photographing the the many animals that I wanted to see...
