Arctic Fox Encounters with Joshua Holko

The second instalment of our three-part Arctic Encounter series centres on a fascinating snow survivor that lives in some of the coldest places on Earth. Nature photographer Joshua Holko tells the tale behind these ethereal pictures of the Arctic Fox

This was photographed in winter in the very extreme north-west of Iceland in the Hornstradir Nature Reserve at Hornvik. There are no roads into this part of Iceland and this remote Arctic peninsula is only accessible by boat in winter. Access is highly weather dependant and is restricted to this part of Iceland in this season. This particular photograph was taken during a heavy snowstorm in near white out conditions as the Arctic Fox paused from its hunt for food.
