August in Kruger National Park in South Africa is mid-winter. It is a dry and arid environment. The wildlife is dusty and mostly the colour of the soil, but in between are splashes of colour: winter flowering plants and brightly coloured birdlife make beautiful subjects in their own right. Having eyes only for the big cats can be a hot (even in winter!) and fruitless result.
